The “Second Concert for Orchestra”, which was composed in 1962, is grouped in three movements without a pause: an “Allegro non troppo, ma deciso”, a “Lento non troppo” and a “Liberamente mosso”. The progression of the three movements develops by means of frequent changes in rhythm and emphasis from which a close connection between the movements is derived.

The orchestra has the customary instrumentation although the percussion instruments assume a certain importance. The musical style is not bound by any predetermined formula, but it may be described as predominantly atonal.

Intellectually this work may be associated more closely with the “Diagramma Circolare” than with the immediately preceeding “First Concert for Orchestra”.
