The
“Third Concert for Orchestra” was composed in 1968/69. It was written for a
regular symphonic orchestra: it is not divided into the traditional movements
being comprised mostly of “Allegri”. Each follows the preceding movement
without a pause and they differ from each other in their obviously different
rhythms.
The
reason for the dedication to Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the combustion
engine, is purely idealistic. There is no indication in the composition of
onomatopoetic inferences to the invention as one would usually expect in
“Machine Music”.
Having
spent a major part of his life in factories among machines, the composer only
wished to make a sentimental reference to one of the men to whom the present
civilisation owes thanks for a considerable part of its mechanical advancement.
